Transfer to the airport

Leave central Guangzhou for Baiyun International Airport. Allow two hours for check-in, security and baggage. The exact departure time follows the issued ticket and the airport transfer will be adjusted accordingly.

Arrive in Datong

After landing, meet the driver and enter the broad northern cityscape. Lunch introduces Datong sliced noodles, shaomai or Hunyuan cold noodles before the afternoon visits begin.

Datong Museum

Use archaeological objects and historical displays to understand Northern Wei Pingcheng, the Liao and Jin western capital and Datong's later development. The galleries establish the context for the temples and grottoes that follow.

Suggested visit: about 2 hours. Advance reservation is normally required.

Old city and Guandi Temple

Walk the old city's central streets and read the relationship between its walls, gateways and traditional rooflines. Continue into Guandi Temple to examine the timber frame, roof decoration and compact courtyard sequence.

Suggested visit: about 40 minutes.

Free time in the old city

Continue walking and photographing the old city independently. As evening lights come on, the walls and historic streets take on a different atmosphere from the daytime.

Dinner and hotel check-in

Choose dinner freely in the old city, then check in to the hotel. Depending on energy, continue with a short evening walk or return to rest before the next day's temple visits.

Leave the hotel for Huayan Temple

After breakfast, enter one of Datong's defining Liao and Jin Buddhist complexes. Follow the central axis through the major halls, sculpture and murals, paying particular attention to the roof structures, bracket sets and the famous smiling bodhisattva.

Suggested visit: about 1.5 to 2 hours.

Shanhua Temple

Move through the spacious and often quieter temple layout, visiting the gate, Sansheng Hall and main hall. The sequence makes it easier to read the scale, proportion and rhythm of historic timber construction.

The temple is close to the old city and can be combined with a relaxed lunch nearby.

Yungang Grottoes

With a local guide, trace how Buddhist art changed as it entered China. Focus on the Tanyao Five Caves and representative caves 5, 6 and 20 while comparing carving styles, scale and iconography across the complex.

Suggested visit: about 2.5 to 3 hours. Access may change temporarily for conservation.

Return to Datong

Drive about forty minutes back to the city. Rest at the hotel, choose dinner freely and, if energy allows, take one final walk through the illuminated old city.
